NEW PROJECT IDEAS FOR 2020

As 2019 draws to a close, we look toward January.  At times, January can be an unpleasant time because the holiday season is over, spring is a ways off, the weather is cold and the only movies are lousy.  Cure the January blues with some brand new projects.

In the new year, as people in cold climates spend more time indoors, they get inspired to try new hobbies. This website has posts the provide a few helpful hints to help you learn.  And this post is here to offer some suggestions as to are where to find those new projects.

Whether you enjoy or want to learn sewing, quilting or crocheting, this list should get you going.

Nana’s Favorite pattern index

new projects - pattern suggestions

Each week Nana adds new patterns to her FREE pattern index.  Look for projects to sew, quilt or crochet.  All the posts contain links to the free patterns as well as a detailed supply list to make shopping easy.  If there is something you want Nana to find for you, shoot me off an email!!

Make something for Charity

Have you ran out of people to make things for but still want to be creative?  There are many others out there that will appreciate your handmade items.  Crochet knockers for Breast Cancer, octopus for preemies, blue hats to stop bullying, or afghans and quilts for the homeless or sick.  If you sew, try making dresses for the needy,……Last year Nana made 20 dresses and 10 pairs of shorts for less fortunate children.

Crochet A-Longs

Join in with others and crochet together.  Now that our Learn to Crochet series has ended, you may be missing the monthly assignments.  Want to crochet along with a group?  Then you may enjoy a crochet-along – CAL for short. These special events can run all year, much like Nana’s Learn to Crochet series, or for only a few weeks.

To help you decide, which one you may like, Nana created a list of Crochet-alongs you may want to join in the new year.  Bookmark the page as I will keep adding to the list as I find more!

Quilt alongs

Not a crocheter??  No problem.  There are literally hundreds of quilt alongs and block of the month clubs created especially for quilters.  In fact, there are so many “Block of the Month” and “Mystery Quilt” clubs and sew and quilt alongs this year,  I could go on for days.  But instead, Nana has also created a list to help quilters as well. Once again, I will keep adding to this list so if you have one you want to add, let me know!

Kit Clubs

When you join a kit club, you will be sent all the materials and instructions to make a new project each month. Many fabric and yarn shops offer these clubs but Annie’s seems to be the most popular. Some of the kit clubs that Annie’s offers include:

Annie’s Caring Crochet Kit Club is a monthly kit subscription that includes all the instructions, patterns, and yarn you need to make projects like chemo caps for cancer patients, blankets for seriously ill and traumatized children, and many more projects for organizations that are making a real difference in people’s lives.

Annies striped afghan

Annie’s offers two afghan kit clubs – Each club offers 11 monthly kits where you crochet either 3 blocks or 3 stripes per month.

Quilters can join Annie’s Creative Quilters Fabric Club which is a monthly kit subscription that sends you six high-quality, perfectly coordinated, 100% cotton fat quarters (18 x 22 inches) and a bonus pattern with step-by-step instructions for making a quick and easy project.

You will also find quilt clubs and block of the month programs available from the Fat Quarter Shop. These clubs send each member a bundle of pre-cut fabric each month based on your choice of fabrics.

Plan Ahead for Special Events

Start creating for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, baby showers and next Christmas.  Yes, Christmas!! You will be surprised how soon, Christmas 2020 will creep up on us.

I hope you can find some inspiration and motivation from these various suggestions. I would love to see your creations. Tag them with #whatsnanamaking @whatsnanamaking2019. I would also love to hear from you. Leave a comment below and don’t forget to share!!

This will be my last post for 2019 as I am going to take the rest of the year to enjoy the holidays! I would like to take this opportunity to wish a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays 2019 to all my followers!!  Thank you for being here as you’re what makes this website happen!
