Tips

ALWAYS, ALWAYS check your gauge.  The worst thing is to spend all that time making something special then finding out it is too small!!

When leaving your crochet project for any period of time, pull your yarn out in a large loop so you know where you ended easily.

Count your stitches regularly (at least every five rows) to ensure you are not dropping stitches.  You should have the same number of stitches for every row!!

To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

Always check the abbreviation in the pattern to determine how a special stitch such as a shell will be made.  You will find that there will be many variations.

When following a pattern that has several sizes in parenthesis, circle or highlight all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

Techniques

MAGIC RING

A magic ring is a way to begin crocheting in the round by crocheting over an adjustable loop and then pulling the loop tight. The advantage of the magic ring method is that there is no hole left in the middle of your starting round.  To make a magic ring check out this post.

STITCH MARKERS

Stitch markers are used to mark a specific spot on your work such as the beginning or end of a row or round.  You can use a variety of things to mark your stitches including safety pins, jewelry clasps, scrap yarn or purchased markers.  I prefer something that opens and closes easily so they are easily moved.

SLIP KNOT

To attach the yarn to the hook you will use a slip knot. Make a loop, then pull another loop through it. Gently tighten sliding the knot up to the hook.

SLIP STITCH

To slip stitch -insert hook into the hole of the chain and pull yarn through the hole and through the remaining loop on the hook

FASTEN OFF

To fasten off, pull the yarn through the last loop.  Tighten and cut yarn leaving about a 2 inch tail.  Weave the tail through the last few stitches to hide it.

REMEMBER U.S. AND U.K. TERMS DIFFER. SO DO THE SIZE OF THE HOOKS.
