Backstitch

To backstitch, stitch up ahead of previous stitch, then down through the end of the previous stitch.  

TIPS

Be sure you have the right needle for your project!!

Cutting anything but fabric will dull your scissors quickly.

Use a good quality thread. Cheap thread is cheap thread and will not last.  I buy all my thread at Connecting Threads

When sewing curves or circles, use the clock method. Think of the face of the clock.  Starting at Noon, sew to 1:00 o’clock, turn slightly, sew to 2:00 o’clock, turn, sew to 3:00 o’clock etc.  LIFT YOUR FOOT when turning to keep the item flat..

If you are unsure about sewing, baste.

When a pattern asks you to clip the seam allowances, check your sewing first. It is easier to take out your mistake and redo BEFORE you clip.
