Whether you are reading blog posts or speaking with an experienced crocheter, you will find that there is a special language known only to hookers.  Learn to talk Crochet and you will be communicating with us in no time!

Hookers like their WIPs!

HOOKERS are what we experienced crocheters call ourselves.  We are making beautiful things with the use of a hook and we work that hook with skill and creativity.  Although we stay up way past dark and hook with our new lighted hooks, the term HOOKER simply refers to one who loves a hook in her hand and yarn at her side.  The avid crocheter aka the “hooker”.

Many of us experienced hookers own many WIP’s.  We have sweater WIP’s and afghan WIP’s, baby WIP’s and adult WIP’s, friend WIP’s and family WIP’s and those WIPs that need to be finished before Christmas.  Have you guessed?  WIP stands for “Work in Progress”.  As you fall in love with those many pins you have saved and purchased the yarn to make them, you too will have a closet full of WIP’s.

Many of us also own UFOs. A special kind of WIP, UFO’s can be spotted in our closets, in grocery bags stuffed somewhere in our houses, even under the bed.  A UFO is also a WIP it just hides a little better. While we continue to work on our WIP’s occasionally, our “UnFinishedObjects” usually stay in hiding a little longer until one day they either become WIPs or are FROGGED.

What do Toads, Frogs and Pigs have to do with Crocheting?

WIPs stuffed in grocery bags are known as PIGS (Project in Grocery bag) or simply  PIBs (Projects In Bag).  This cannot be a good thing.  Because your PIG could soon become a TOAD that needs to be FROGGED.

Yes, TOADS, those “Trashed Objects Abandoned in Disgust” are definitely FROGGED.

LEARN TO TALK CROCHET FROG

RIP IT

RIP IT

FROG IT – Ribbit, Ribbit.  We all hate to FROG it!  But Frog it we must.  To FROG our work is to rip out the last few (or more) rows because we found a mistake and this rip-it rip-it resembles the sound of a frog at play “Ribbit, Ribbit, I must Rip it”.

And when your FROGGING is done and your project complete TADA!  You can now show off your HOTH. Hot off the hook is a GREAT accomplishment because HOTH, you are finished!  These projects are also known as a FOTH (fresh off the hook) or JOTH (just off the hook).

Want to go on a YART to get a YAP to add to your STASH?

YARTS are so much fun!  Take your BFF on a “yarn acquisition road trip” this weekend.   You both probably need a YAP “Yet Another Project” so why not.  If you have OCD (Obsessive Crochet Disorder), you will never have too much yarn.

When we talk about  STASH we mean ALL your yarn, including the hidden yarn that your husband doesn’t know about.  A stash usually consists of USO’s. (UnStartedObjects) Find a pattern and start your project and your USO becomes a WIP.   Put it aside for awhile and it becomes a UFO.  Too long and you have a TOAD which may need FROGGING.

Are you getting it?  Need more practise? Let’s learn to talk about Crochet yarn!!

Learn to talk crochet - CAKES

CAKES – Yum, Yum.  Many crochet companies are now selling their yarn in Cakes.  You can get Shawls in a Cake, Cupcakes,  Hot Cakes, Caron Cakes, gradient cakes, striping cakes, ombre cakes. acrylic cakes, cotton cakes and more!   A cake is also the winded yarn you end up with when you use a a yarn winder.

YARN BARF – LOL.  No, it is not what you do when you have too much CAKE.  It is the messed up center of that cake.  The horrible tangle when you pull too much yarn out of the center of your ball or skein.

YARN BARF is not to be confused with clown barf  which happens when that gorgeous variegated yarn collects in an unattractive pattern.

Well, I am off to C2C – No I am not going on a vacation to the ocean!  I am working on my crochet “Corner 2 Corner” with my CAL gals (aka the Crochet Along group)

See you soon

  1. Hi Nana! I learnt to crochet many years ago when I was a very small girl – I’m sure we didn’t talk like that back then! A humourous post, thanks for the giggle. Wishing you a lovely weekend. 🙂

  2. Cute post! I knew some of that lingo, but I must say I learned a thing or two. Thanks for linking up with us at the #WednesdayAIMLinkParty 39 Pinned!

  3. This is brilliant! I use these terms in crochet groups but never really stopped to think how funny it sounds when you put them all together like this 😀
