Learn to Crochet In a Spiral

You asked for it! Here it is. Hot off my hook! Learn to Crochet in a Spiral with Nana K!

Whether you are making a hot pad or an extra large rug, crocheting in a spiral can be fun. And it’s so easy! This tutorial outlines everything you need to know to start today.

You can achieve a similar effect by crocheting in rounds changing colors every round, but by crocheting in a spiral you will be crocheting in one continuous round, and round, and round.

The photo on the left has been crocheted in rounds, while the photo on the right was crocheted in a spiral. Each has a different look. Photos from Bluprint.

Today we will be learning the spiral technique.

LET’S BEGIN

What you will need:

  • Yarn – for purposes of this tutorial, I have chosen three colors. You may choose up to six colors. This is a great project for scraps.
  • Crochet hook – use the size that corresponds to the weight of yarn you are using

Nana is using Paintbox Chunky yarn, in Vintage Pink, Slate Grey and Vanilla Cream with a Size I-9 (5.5 mm) hook. (Lovecrafts is an affiliate, which means I earn a small commission if you click on the link and make a purchase)

The following are the written instructions. To see the spiral created in a video, keep scrolling to the video link!!

You will be starting the spiral with a magic ring. If you are unfamiliar with how to create a magic ring, CLICK HERE to see Nana’s tutorial “How to Create a Magic Ring”.

Round 1 – Into the magic ring and using Color A, make one single crochet (SC), one half double crochet (HDC) and two double crochet (DC). Remove hook but do not break the yarn.

Attach Color B into the ring, and crochet one SC, one HDC and two DC. Remove hook but do not break the yarn.

Repeat again with Color C. Close your magic ring.

Round 2 – Pick up Color A, and crochet 2 double crochets into each Color B stitches below (8 DCs made). Next pick up Color B and make 2DC into each of Color C stitches, then with Color C, 2DC into 4 stitches of Color A (24 stitches)

Round Two completed

Round 3 – Pick up Color A and crochet *1 DC, 2 DC* four times. (12 DC). Repeat with colors B and C. (36 stitches)

Round 4 – With Color A, crochet *1 DC, 1 DC, 2 DC* four times. Repeat with Colors B and C. (48 stitches)

Round 5 – With Color A, crochet *1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 2 DC* four times. Repeat with B and C. (60 stitches)

Remaining rounds – Are you getting the hang of it? Repeat Round 5 increasing 1DC between the stars * * each round.

Ending the spiral – Once your work is at the desired size, you may simply fasten off each color. This is called the stepped finished.

Your other choice is to create a tapered finish. To create the taper you will make 3 more stitches with each color. Work 1 HDC into the next stitch, 1 SC into the next stitch, then slip stitch into the next. Fasten off and weave in your ends!

YOU DID IT!!

Keeping it flat

Sometimes when crocheting a circle you will end up with some ruffling or cupping. If your circle is ruffling, you are increasing too many stitches per round. If your circle is cupping – looking more like a bowl – you need to increase more in each round.

Now that you know how, there are so many things you can make using the spiral. Here are a few examples:

Even a Slouch Hat

But don’t stop there!! You can also make trivets, placemats, pillows and more!!
