Now that Christmas 2018 has come and gone, I reflected on all the homemade gifts I made and picked my favorite for this blog. I recently had a new granddaughter and decided to crochet her a sweater for spring. Once done, I had a lot of gorgeous yarn left over and wouldn’t you know it – upped popped these wonderful patterns for boots and a hat. This lovely set was the most-loved gift on Christmas morning.
When shopping for yarns (not shopping but browsing of course), I fell in love with this ombre yarn by Loops and Threads – Color was Pixie Bloom. Not knowing exactly what I was going to make with this, I bought 4 balls. With my new purchase in hand and a new baby in mind, I started looking for patterns. I found this oh so cute pattern on Heart, Hook and Home
Once the sweater was complete, I still had lots of this beautiful yarn left over. To make the set, I used these patterns for booties and a hat.
So Let’s Get Started!!
MATERIALS NEEDED
- 3 balls – approximately 560 yds/ 515 meters of Worsted Weight (Size 4) yarn
- Crochet hooks – Size US G6/4.00mm, US I9/5.50mm and USJ/6mm or whichever size needed to achieve the required gauge
- Yarn needle
- Patterns – click on images above.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS check your gauge. The worst thing is to spend all that time making something special then finding out it is too small!!
THE SWEATER and THE SURPRISE!!
As promised, I have a surprise (rather a confession). Before making this sweater, I made the toddler version for my older granddaughter! Using a smaller hook as per the instructions, I made the sweater in an 18 months size.
With the experience of the first sweater behind me, a few changes were made on the second version.
First, I wasn’t a big fan of the ribbing on the edges, therefore, I simply continued the half double crochet in the white trim. Here you can see them side by side.
Second, I wanted buttonholes. To add the buttonholes, I crocheted the first row of the trim. Then I marked where I wanted the buttonholes to be using the stitch markers. On the second round of trim, I added a chain at the stitch marker, skipped a HDC, then continued as normal with a HDC in the next stitch. So, when you reach a stitch marker, HDC, CH1, HDC. On the third row of trim, be sure to HDC into the chain.
Here are some tips to help you with this pattern.
- When you divide the front and back, you will be short two stitches. This is because the stitch marker stitches will have 2 HDC in them. One for each front and one for the back.
- Chain is a stitch. If you do not HDC in your turning chain, you will lose a stitch per row.
- Learn to count Row #/Stitch #. For example, 28-11, 28-12, 28-13……….42-9, 42-10, 42-11
- When you work in a spiral use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each row. This will help you keep track of your stitch counts.
- When sewing seams together, turn sweater to wrong side. Pick up the top loop on each side of the seam (see picture). Work stitch from Side a to Side B, then Side B to Side A.
THE BOOTIES
These booties were quick and easy and are SO cute! Just like UGGS. You can crochet them using either double yarn or bulky yarn. I tried both and they worked great. I had to use a larger hook for these because they were crocheting up small.
THE HAT
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this pattern! So easy to do. The pattern instructions were fabulous and it crochets up nice and soft. I used white to make the turban to have it match the sweater. What do you think?
I even learned to make a MAGIC ring!! Click here for a link to the tutorial
Don’t you just love this set? What was your favorite handmade gift this Christmas??
