Happy New Year to All! It is time for new beginnings, resolutions and to face the winter ahead.  What better time to consider some new DIY’s, learn some new skills and get to those unfinished projects.

2019 Marks the first year that all children born in the new millennia are officially adults. And these new adults have gotten back into traditional crafting.  Many more are knitting and crocheting. Knitting and crochet are especially popular now with millennials because of their interest and appreciation of DIY and making.    ‘Making’ is an important part of their lives.

Older boomers, who are either retiring or close to it, have more time to pick up these crafts again, and are especially motivated to sew, knit, or crochet for grandchildren. Studies reveal that crafting not only makes you feel good, it has mental and physical health benefits too.

Trends in fashion, home décor and lifestyle effect what we will make this year.  Let’s discover how the trends will effect us in 2019!

After a bit of research,  I found a number of up and coming trends for 2019 that may help you decide what to create this year.  Whether you are a millennial, a baby boomer,or somewhere in between, I hope you get out those needles and supplies and start sewing, quilting and crafting

COLORS

The trend in colors is important as they will dictate what fabrics, yarns or supplies you may choose for your DIY projects.  This year the trend  is goodbye to monochrome, hello to color!

The most trendy of colors for 2019 – YELLOW AND CORAL

Coral and marigold yellow have been popping up everywhere in the new fashion trends as well as home design.

According to Pinterest, Searches for ‘mustard yellow’ were up by 45 per cent.

Pantone has chosen a pinkish shade of orange that they have called “Living Coral” as its choice for the color of the year.

PATCHWORK

Attention quilters!!  Patchwork is fast becoming popular both in home décor as well as on the runways.

Geometric patchwork designs are appearing on walls and in home décor.

FASHION TO SEW

As mentioned earlier, Marigold yellow (is this the same as mustard?)  and coral, are the colors to watch for this year.

Puffy sleeves, ruffles, patchwork, fringing, and tie-dye T-shirts are appearing in fashion.

Not only styles of women’s clothing change but also men and children styles.

For men, the trend is toward light wash denim, plaids, and corduroy.

Girls clothes in 2019  include bright color palettes, trim and decorative elements such as bows, embroidery and fringe.

QUILTS

Pre-cuts, wholecloth, and hexagons are becoming increasingly popular in quilting stores.  Pre-cut fabrics and laser-cuts keep creative control in the hands of makers by cutting down on tedious parts of the quilting process.  In addition, to charms, layer cakes and strips;  hexagons pre-cuts have been introduced by some quilting manufacturers

Pre-cut quilt kits are also available.

In 2019, tropical and boho themes are popping up.  Color will be making a comeback.

Applique is also coming increasingly popular and we will also be seeing a return to traditional quilting.

CROCHET

Designers are turning to crochet. From  open weaves to knitted pullovers, the effect is slightly bohemian.

ZERO WASTE

The culture of disposable fashion and single-use plastics is slowly but surely being replaced by a mindset of sustainability, slow fashion and a newfound pride in craftsmanship. Zero Waste is a lifestyle in which all products are used or reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators or the ocean.
