How to Make a Quick and Easy Envelope Pillow

Whether you want to change the color of your home, add some pop to a neutral palette or add some festive touches to the holiday seasons, throw pillows are the perfect way to achieve this without a lot of dollars. And an envelope pillow case makes it even easier due to it’s versatility.

Envelope pillow cases are fabulous. One pillow, numerous looks. Simply change the “envelope” and you can have a new look everyday!!

This tutorial will show you how to make an envelope pillow quickly and easily in less than an hour!!

One of the easiest way to change your decor is by using pillows. Grab two fat quarters and create numerous “envelopes”. The envelope pillow cases are easily removed from the pillow form making them washable, versatile and so simple to change the decor in your home.

STEP ONE – MAKE A PILLOW TOP

Make your pillow top. Be creative or keep it simple. Add applique, use a quilt block, weave, crochet, sew or find a gorgeous piece of fabric. Whatever you like, simply make a top the same size as your pillow form plus 1 inch for your seams.

For my example, we will be making a pillow 14 inches by 14 inches. In this case, you will make your pillow top 15 inches by 15 inches.

STEP TWO – CUT YOUR BACKINGS

To create the envelope, you will need two separate pieces of fabric for the back of the pillow.

The first piece will be the same width as the pillow top and 1/2 the length of the top plus 1 inch (or more) to hem the edge. The width of the pillow top in our example is 15 inches. One-half of the length of the top is 7-1/2 inches (15 divided by 2). So our first piece will be 15″ wide by 8-1/2 inches (7-1/2 plus 1 inch) long.

The second piece will be the same width (15 inches) but this time the length will be 1/2 the length of the top PLUS 3-4 inches to allow for the overlap. So our second piece will be 15 inches wide by 10-1/2 to 11-1/2 inches long.

You can use various scraps to make both the front and back by piecing fabrics to create the desired sizes!

STEP 3 – HEM BOTH PIECES

On one long edge of each piece turn under 1/2 inch, then turn under again another 1/2″ inch to create the hem. Topstitch in place.

STEP 4 – STITCH BOTTOM TO THE TOP

With the right sides together, place the smaller piece on top of the pillow top. Pin or baste in place.

Next, place the longer piece on top of the pillow top overlapping the smaller piece. Pin or baste in place.

Stitch all the edges using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

TADA!! YOU HAVE CREATED AN ENVELOPE PILLOW CASE

Turn your pillow case right side out and stuff with the pillow form. Enjoy your creation!

Now make another and change your look tomorrow!
