Have you ever shopped on Etsy? Nana does – a lot! I was recently asked what I buy on Etsy and decided to write this post on Why Quilters Love Etsy.
Quilters Love Etsy for a number of reasons from the uniqueness of products available to the almost free patterns available at your fingertips. Come find out why Nana loves Etsy.
What’s Nana Making utilizes affiliate programs for monetization, which means when you click on links to various products that I recommend and make a purchase, this can result in a commission that is credited to this site. Please be sure to read our Privacy Policy
Etsy is an American e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and craft supplies. So why should quilters know all about Etsy?
- Items available on Etsy are unique and often you can find items that you cannot find anywhere else
- Etsy offers fast shipping from the sellers. If it is patterns you are looking for, you can download them as soon as you pay.
- Hard to find and discontinued items are sometimes available on Etsy
- Searching for items is relatively easy
- Ideas, ideas, ideas. I regularly come to Etsy for ideas on what to create next and there are tons of new, unique ideas.
What can a quilter buy on Etsy??
Everything! Etsy saved me during the COVID crisis. When items were sold out or taking weeks to deliver, I found all I needed from Etsy sellers. You can buy everything from fabric and thread to ways to display your finished masterpieces and everything in between. Simply search for what you are looking for and I guarantee you will find results.
Here are Nana’s Top Ten things Quilters will Love on Etsy….
FABRIC BY THE YARD
Fabric by the yard is available from several retailers. One of my favorites is Spoonflower. Spoonflower is an on-demand, digital printing company that prints custom fabric, wallpaper, and home decor. Each design in the shop has been crafted by an independent designer who earns a portion of every sale. Because the fabric is printed on-demand it does take longer to arrive (3-4 weeks) but you get custom, quality fabric. I bought my fabric from Spoonflower to make my cheater quilts, as well as the owls for my grandson’s quilt which were custom sized by the designer just for me.
Other fabrics that can be found are discontinued fabric collections and vintage fabrics. Found a pattern but the fabric is no longer available? Try Etsy.
I searched “Fabric by the Yard” and got 406,658 results. “Quilting fabric by the yard” produced 394,404 results. If you need help searching, Etsy offers some tips.
PRECUTS AND CUSTOM SQUARES
Prepackaged by the manufacturer or custom made by Etsy sellers, you can find all your regular pre-cuts here- jelly rolls, charm packs, fat quarters and more! What’s even better is sometimes you can buy just ONE fat quarter.
Thinking of making an I SPY quilt – buy the precut I SPY squares here.
You will even find custom photo squares in sizes from 4 inch square to 24 inches square.
PATTERNS
Patterns, patterns and more patterns. Most are from independent designers that can be digitally downloaded right after purchase. Others are discontinued, vintage, or hard to find patterns.
From blocks to paper piecing, mug rugs to king size, beginners to art quilts. There are patterns!! Lots of patterns.
HINT: Narrow your search by indicating the type of pattern you are looking for. For example, “quilt wall hanging pattern” “quilt pattern baby”.
STENCILS
Do you machine quilt your own quilts. Etsy has a great selection of free motion quilting stencils.
Choose from a fabulous variety of designs or create your own.
LABELS
Personalize your quilts by adding a label. Tell them how to wash it. Tell them who it’s from. Tell them why you made it. Add Baby’s name, the wedding date, a poem or sentiment. You can add anything you want to make that quilt special!!
APPLIQUE TEMPLATES

And then, when you want more, get the pattern for a full size applique quilt! OR maybe a table topper?
