Every year on August 15 crocheters from around the world celebrate Granny Square Day. Yarn stores and bloggers get together to celebrate the classic granny square by offering tutorials, videos, freebies and more.

Granny Square Day was created in 2014  Susan Regalia, who realized that the little squares on Instagram looked a lot the patchwork arrangement of the classic granny square blanket. She asked crocheters to post pictures of granny squares online and the first virtual granny square afghan was created. Other hookers soon caught on to the concept and so Granny Square Day was born – bringing the worldwide crochet community together in a celebration of design and color.

How Granny Square Day works

On August 15, people from all over the world post pictures of granny squares using the hashtag #grannysquareday2019. By the end of the day there are so many photos of squares that when you view these photos, virtual blankets are created.

The concept became so popular that Susan Regalia reached out for help. Today Simply Crochet Magazine helps run the event and yarn stores, designers and Instagrammers become involved and celebrate the day with special offers, tutorials and giveaways. Some great offers today include:

• Simply Crochet Magazine who sponsors the event has a Free Granny Square Day 2019 Pattern Booklet and have been posting a Granny Square a Day since August 1.
• Ravelry is offering 50% off selected patterns
• And if I find out more, I will post on my Facebook page

And many Instagram followers use the blocks in many different combinations to create collages of virtual afghans. Enter hastag #grannysquareday2018 #grannysquareday2017 or earlier to see the wonderful creations of prior years

How to celebrate Granny Square Day

To celebrate Granny Square Day 2019,  take a picture of your granny square and crop the picture into a square shape, so that your square neatly fills up the entire space.  Share your picture on your Instagram, and use the #grannysquareday2019. Your squares could be added to this year’s virtual blankets.
