This adorable baby infinity scarf is easy to make and makes a great baby gift. The infinity scarf makes a great drool bib for teething little ones. And they look so fashionable!
The baby infinity scarf was designed with safety in mind as it closes in the back with a snap or velcro so that the loops cannot tighten around your baby’s neck. It also makes it easy to take on and off!
Attending a craft fair with your daughter provides you many OOH’s and AAH’s and “I want that for my baby!”. My reply of course is …..
One of the items she wanted was an infinity scarf for her new baby. Searching for a pattern, I found exactly what I wanted on Etsy.
Next, a trip to the fabric store where I picked out these three lightweight fabrics.
What I learned
The pattern is very easy to follow, but here are Nana’s tips and tricks I learned while making the infinity scarf.
When you cut the pieces out for the infinity scarf, cut both pieces at the same time, they will fit perfectly together. Cut 2 large and 2 small.
To sew slippery fabric – use LOTS of pins or hand baste to keep the fabric pieces together.
For more or sewing slippery and stretchy fabric check out my tips from the baby leggings post!
If your fabric has stretch – Some machines come with a stretch stitch. If your machine does not, use a small zigzag stitch and DO NOT pull the fabric. Let your machine do the work. If you are seeing missed stitches, check your needle. Are you using the correct type and is it sharp?
Start sewing where indicated on the pattern and sew all around leaving a small opening to turn inside out. I left approximately one inch.
When sewing curves or circles, use the clock method. Think of the face of the clock. Starting at Noon, sew to 1:00 o’clock, turn slightly, sew to 2:00 o’clock, turn, sew to 3:00 o’clock etc. LIFT YOUR FOOT when turning to keep the item flat.
This left a hole in the infinity scarf big enough for my finger to push out the curves and points and finger press the seams.
Once your two pieces are made pay particular attention to the instructions on how to attach the two pieces together. The twist in the infinity scarf is made by placing the two pieces together correctly.
Done!
Adding the closure
Now you add the closure. You may use Velcro or snaps. I choose these pretty pearl snaps that are available in many colors.
A complete snap has four pieces: the ball or stud, the socket, and the two rings with spikes that attach them to the fabric. A decorative snap would have one solid back piece instead of a ring, such as the pearl snaps I used on my infinity scarf.
Decide and mark where you want the snaps. On the side of the scarf that will be on the top of the overlap, you will use the pearl piece. Insert the spikes through the fabric downward through the top of the overlapped side of the scarf. The ball piece (stud) will be inserted on top of this spike. On the side of the infinity scarf that is underneath, you will attach the socket facing upwards. That is, the spiked ring will be placed upward through the fabric toward the overlapped top piece of the infinity scarf.
To attach the snaps, you will also need a tool. There are various types of tools available. I prefer the hammer tool. but you may also prefer snap pliers
Following the instructions on the package and your tool, attach the snap to both sides of the scarf.
- Make sure you use a hammer.
- For pearl snaps, use a towel underneath to secure and hammer.
Having trouble? There is a great tutorial from MakeIt LoveIt here.
How many babies can you make a baby infinity scarf for? I made five for my granddaughter and my daughter was pleased. I would love to see your creations. Please leave me a comment. And as always, if you have a question on how to make these, let me know.
